Arab, bay, born on the farm of Mr J L Fourcade near Tarbes. For many people, one need say no more, for these two names together sum up over 100 years of Arab breeding and racing. But perhaps one should elaborate...

The Fourcade family has been breeding and racing Arabs since the end of the 19th century. In 1935, the broodmare DJERID (DENOUSTE x DJEDARIA) bred by Mr Lacrouts in 1926, arrived on their stud farm following her successful racing career of six wins from seven starts.

Through her sire DENOUSTE and dam DJEDARIA (OHALABAWI x DINAH), DJERID is the progeny of the oldest and most successful French Arab bloodline. DJERID's bloodline goes back to WARDA (1833), who was imported into France and whose descendants include many famous names such as FEZ, SINAI, DJEBEL, DJEBEL-MOUSA, DRAGON, DJERBA-OUA, DJOURAN, DJOURAS-TU, DJELFOR, DJEL-DUR, FLIPPER, BENGALI-D'ALBRET, AKBAR, TOUT-AN-KHAN and, of course, DJOURMAN, DJOURIBI and TORNADO DE SYRAH.

The males of the WARDA bloodline have achieved fame both on the race track and at stud, but the females should not be forgotten as they too have passed their successful breeding genes from mother to daughter. Among the famous broodmares are DALHIA, who was crossed with the imported ASFAR to produce DRAGONNE, who was in turn the dam of DOURKA and second dam of DJEBEL-MOUSA. DAHLIA is also the dam of DIANE by BURKEGUY, and through her the second dam of DINAH. DINAH was covered twice by the eastern GALBAWI and produced DJEDARIA, who started the maternal line of DJOURMAN and DJARANAT whose descendants include DRAGON, DJERBA-OUA, DAMAS, the third dam of DJELFOR, and DJEL DUR.

DJERID became one of the pillars of the Fourcade breeding operation, passing on her genetic potential to her sons, DJEL and DJORT (by NIFANOR) and her granddaughter DJEDA (ALARIC V x DJERISSA) who were all winners. At stud, DJEDA was covered by the Franco-Tunisian stallion OUROUR (DUC II x IMMAMA) and produced DJOURA in 1960. DJOURA was unable to shine on the track because purebred Arab racing was discontinued in 1958-1959 as the fashion at the time was for Anglo-Arabs.

DJOURA was covered by the stallion SAINT LAURENT and produced DJOURANTA in 1974, the year that purebred Arab racing was restarted in France.

In 1974, the special prize for Arab horses was won by the Pompadour BRASSICAIRE (OUROUR X BOSSA-NOVA) and MANGUIER (GOSSE DU BEARN x MANDRAGORE) was third. This took place at La Loubere, near to Tarbes, where Mr J L Fourcade, who was president of the town's race track and had taken over the stud from his father, had been campaigning to restart purebred Arab racing since the beginning of the 1970s.

DJOURANTA went into training and was placed five times in six starts. When she retired from the track she was covered by MANGUIER twice. MANGUIER was a member of the Em Arkoub bloodline, bred by the Watrigant family in the 1950s, and was the three-quarter brother of MANGANATE. MANGUIER, however had longer lines and a lighter frame than his famous brother. He died prematurely and has no female descendants but three of his sons were stallions : DJOURAS-TU (x DJOURA), DJOURMAN and DJOURGUIER (x DJOURANTA). DJOURGUIER died shortly after his arrival at stud and has no descendants.

DJOURMAN, whose racing career started in 1983, dominated his generation of track performers including such horses as BENJI (CHERI x MANAGHI), OCTAVIUS (CHERI BIBI x NANOU), DJOU LAILA (BADR-BEDUR x DJOURA), DAHMAN-EL-ARAMI (DAHR x MINOUCHE II). He won three times and was placed three times in six starts. DJOURMAN was entered in the Tarbes sale of the same year and was bought by the Administration des Haras more for his track performances and pedigree than for his model. In fact, like his uncle DJOURAS-TU, DJOURMAN was a little weak in the back, but this fault was not passed on systematically and was counterbalanced by a very good forearm and a deep chest. Nevertheless, this is probably one of the reasons why these two stallions had difficulty in building a reputation at stud where they were in competition with two of the great names of the time : MANGANATE and CHERI BIBI.

VOLCANO DE CARRERE (x SAMBA by BAROUD III) launched DJOURMAN's stud career and there followed VERTIGO (x QUOVALINA), DIFFA DU BAC (x ALPHANGE), TORNADO DE SYRAH (x POM DU BERLAIS), PEPE LE MOCCO (x ARCA DU CASSOU) and the 1998 season looks good for his last progeny as two of his sons ALI BEY (x SEGUYA) and DJEBEL SIMBA (x DAPHNE DE SAULARIC) won at the beginning of the year.

DJOURMAN died in 1996, the same year as his mother DJOURANTA. His colts seem superior to his fillies but perhaps that is just because they are more precocious. It is too early to tell whether he is a good broodmare sire, although his daughter VALINA DES FABRIES (x QUOVALINA) has the makings of a good career at stud.

If is probable that DJOURMAN's products have not been used in the best possible way. It seems that not enough notice has been taken of his character, inherited from his mother, which makes brilliant horses in the morning gallops but also horses which easily boil over. They are falsely precocious and over generous and therefore, many of his products have not been able to realize their full potential. Certainly it is necessary to give them time.

The WARDA bloodline is still going strong. DJOURANTA also left behind her progeny DJOUZULA (x ZULU), DJOURIBI (x CHERI BIBI), DJELSOMINA and DJELFEE (x KESBER0Y) and FIFINE APPAPALOU and ORIENT-EXPRESS (x MANGANATE).

P.S. I will remember for the rest of my life the day when Mr J L Fourcade said to me, as if in passing, "I'll sell DJOURANTA". I thought the sky was about to fall on my head and quickly replied "I'll buy her".

She was with me from 1989 to 1996 and always had a good character, in fact, at home we referred to her as Madame DJOURANTA. Her sons and daughters have inherited this noble presence and it takes years to fully understand this bearing that can be taken for temper but is, in reality, the mark of a purebred.
