French Arabians: Q & A
Stacey Meyers: What tracks are
in France?
Roxanne Rogers: Toulouse, Agen, Dax, Evry, Pompadour (beautiful
beyond belief), Mont de Marsan, Tarbes, Marseilles, Montaubaun,
very prestigious - Chantilly and Craon.
SM: Do they have sales such as Fasig -Tipton?
RR: Not really. Horse sales are not such an ingrained part of
Equine culture in France as in the US. The major players usually
do not support auctions and prefer to sell privately. The French
Racing Association recently held an auction at Chantilly. 52 horses
were entered, 20 sold for a total of 5,263,960 FF ($1,050,000)
with an average of 263,198 FF ($52,000). It is generally thought
that auctions are more apt to be used by those breeders with fewer
contacts since it is quite easy to sell top quality racehorses
and/or race related breeding stock for a lot of money off of the
farm. The figure of $80,000. seems to be a typical one for a well
bred French youngster.
SM: What sires in France are leading the pack?
RR: Kesberoy (Saint Laurent x Keiba by Dragon) will finish as
the leading French sire this year ('96). He is the sire of *Virgule
al Maury and Kerra.
Cheri Bibi (Baroud III x Nevada II by Djanor) 1/4(4-0-0). Cheri
Bibi has been in the top of the standings for many years in spite
of his death 5 years ago. He is the sire of Bengali D'Albret ,
Dida Cheri and *Haffir el Rimal.
Manganate (Saint Laurent x Mandragore by Dragon). A 3/4 brother
to Kesberoy, Manganate died this past August at the age of 24.
He is the sire of many top French racehorses and sires including
Djelfor, Dormane, Djamel etc.
Tidjani (Flipper x Managhi by Saint Laurent) 1/5(5-0-0).Tidjani
is the sire of Djanazid, Tessadite (leading 3 year old racehorse
in France) and &* Ala Croixnoire (also a leading 3 year old).
Djelfor (Manganate x Djebella II by Badr Bedur) 1/7(5-2-0).
Sire of *Calin de Louve 2/8(8-0-0)6 - undefeated in the US.
Of the top French sires only three are 100% French blood. They
are, Tidjani, Kesberoy and Djouras Tu (Manguier x Djoura by Ourour)
7 (5-2-0). Most French stallions now carry an infusion of Polish
blood (Grabiec, Badr Bedur) and it is usually appears on the distaff
side of the pedigree.
SM: Do they have the same system as Poland of trial by the racetrack
for young stock?
RR: No. Their system is not State controlled. The French system
is more like America's where private breeders and owners race
whichever horses they choose. However the State will occasionally
buy proven racehorses for National Stud service.
SM: Do they have a State run Stud or how is it done?
RR: There are several Sate run Studs. The Studs that I visited
were Pau, Villeneuve sur Lot, Pompadour, Gramat but there are
more than that. Djelfor was at Pompadour and he had 60+ mares
booked. Dormane was at Gramat and he had as many booked also.
There are many private breeders also. The major breeders are Seahorse
Int'l, Haras du Maury, Jean Marc de Watrigant, Jean Claude di
Francesco, Harras de Carrere and M. Saphore.
SM: Have you bred to any French horses?
RR: Indeed. I bred to the highly esteemed stallions, *Haffir el
Rimal and *Ala Croixnoire since their pedigrees are so strong
and they are typically "French".
SM: Have you seen any foals yet?
RR: From 4 unrelated mares I have seen foals by *Haffir el Rimal
and *Ala Croixnoire and they are very well "stamped":
strong hindquarters, very correct legs, excellent bone, deep heartgirths,
prominent withers, laid - back shoulders and excellent minds.
I saw foals in France by Manganate, Tidjani, Djelfor etc. and
although the French crosses may not be as nice yet as the pure
French foals they are coming very close. In outcrossing my Polish
mares to French lines I have obtained breeding goals that may
have been impossible otherwise. I strongly urge anyone considering
race breeding to look for other breeders who have already done
this cross and see with their own eyes how much can be accomplished
with this cross, particularly with a good choice of sire.
SM: I am always interested in mare families...
RR:

Amica - Maderba, Arca du Cassou
Djaranat - Deborah IV
Djedaria - Djouranta
Eloura - Fantazia
Fatoumah -Razzia III, Zid Htatousel, Djanizid, Fleur du Bearn,

Arabian Sirelines In order to talk about prominent Polish sires in a coherent fashion it is necessary to look at the sire lines these stallions represent. |
